Bacon Wrapped Brussel Sprouts

I love brussel sprouts and for some reason always want to serve them as an appetizer. There aren't many brussel sprout appetizer recipes out there. So, I whipped this together today and it is wonderful! I will certainly make this again.

A dozen brussel sprouts, rinsed and ends removed
6 bacon pieces
2 tbs butter
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tbs milk
1 tsp soy sauce
tooth picks

Spray a cooking pan with cooking spray and broil brussel sprouts for 15 minutes. Cut bacon pieces so each is long enough to wrap around a sprout completely. Wrap each sprout with bacon securing with tooth pick and place in 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes or until bacon is cooked.
While sprouts are in oven, use a small saucepan to make the sauce for the sprouts. Melt butter, add sugar, milk and soy sauce on medium heat, constantly whisking. Once bubbly, turn heat down to low.
Once bacon is cooked drizzle sauce on each sprout. They are very hot, so allow to cool for 30 minutes until you serve them warm. Delish!

  1. Please tell us how to select "good" brussel sprouts. Mine always seem...extra bitter!

  2. Brussel sprouts are bitter, but there are things you can do to minimize the bitterness. The bitterness comes from the stem of the sprouts. When selecting, choose the brightest ones. Overcooking sprouts make them more bitter, so boiling them is a good way to avoid that. Once they are tender you can pull them from the boiling water and rinse with cold water to stop the cooking.
Cutting an "X" into the stem or removing the ends of the sprout help so it is cooked evenly throughout.
Try boiling the sprouts in this recipe instead of roasting them and let us know if they are less bitter for you!
